E85 is an 85% ethanol flex fuel sold at a small number of specialist stations across Melbourne. It delivers significantly higher octane (around 105 RON) making it popular with performance and modified vehicles. Only flex-fuel vehicles (FFV) — or properly converted engines — should run E85. Because ethanol contains roughly 30% less energy than petrol, expect fuel consumption to rise substantially, meaning the cost advantage over premium only emerges if your car is tuned to extract the octane benefit.
